Porterville College

All Work Experience students must attend a MANDATORY orientation in Commons A of the LRC Building during the second week of class. Please choose from the following dates/times (no appointment necessary): Tuesday, January 24th, 6:00-7:00 pm; Wednesday, January 25th, 6:00-7:00 pm; or Friday, January 27th, 10:00-11:00 am.

STUDENTS THAT DO NOT ATTEND ONE OF THESES ORIENTATIONS MAY BE DROPPED FROM THE CLASS. Please check your Porterville College email during the first week of the semester for additional information.

  • Updated Resume – Due Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012
  • Job Application– Due Thursday, March 15, 2012
  • Seminar Hours (1st & 2nd semesters only) Due: Thursday, April 19, 2012
  • Timesheet - Timesheets 1 and 2 are due March 15, 2012;
  • Timesheet - Timesheets 3 and 4 are due May 3, 2012.
  • Final- Electronic submission saved as a Word Document of work is to be submitted double-spaced, with one-inch margins and 12-point Times or Times New Roman type.  Prepare one full page for each Learning Objective (total of 3 full pages required).  Due Thursday, May 3, 2012. 

What is
Cooperative Work Experience Education?

Cooperative Work Experience IS transferable, depending upon approval of receiving institution. Because enrollment is an ongoing process, Orientation Sessions must be scheduled by student as early as possible. Please contact instructor for additional information.

  • For each 75 hours you work during the semester (16 weeks) at a PAID job you may take one credit of Work Experience.

  • For each 60 hours you work during the semester (16 weeks) at a VOLUNTEER job you may take one credit of Work Experience.

Cooperative Work Experience Education helps students to:

  • Achieve new knowledge directly related to business, industry, and government that can be used in future work.
  • Improve job performance and allow an organized process for validation and documentation of job performance that can lead to promotion or a better job.
  • Make a connection between school and work by practicing what students learn at school and by employing what they learned in seminars to help employers meet future needs.
  • Increase Communication between employer and employee
  • Balance their class load with a combination of curricular studies and Cooperative Work Experience Education.
  • Have access to information to assist in marketing their skills to obtain, keep or advance on the job by attending seminars.
  • Become more interested in their work, more motivated on their job, find more variety and challenge within their job, and be more committed to improvement of their job.
  • Develop better work habits and attitudes.
  • Have the scope of their work duties broadened by their employer.
  • Set goals on their job that carry over to their personal life.
  • Develop Confidence and learn to interact on the job.
  • Earn college credits and earn money at the same time.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions About Work Experience

  • No, we are not an employment or placement center. We do not find you a job.
  • Yes, you must already be employed to enroll in a Work Experience class.
  • Work Experience is an Open Entry/Open Exit class, meaning you may add or drop the class at any time during the semester.
  • Occupational Work Experience is for students whose job is related to their career path.
  • General Work Experience is for students whose job is NOT related to their career path.
  • Entrepreneurial Work Experience is for SWAP MEET WORKERS ONLY.
  • You may be employed for pay or as a volunteer. CRN #s with a P are for paid employment. CRN #s with an N are for non-pay/volunteer employment.
